About BISS

Mission statement

Creating work and income for the vulnerable in Uganda through bakery training in combination with start-up-kit-supply and follow-up.

Vision

We want to create real opportunities. We are bakers. We want to inspire people to do the same in their area of work. We want to be the leading example in effective job creation. We believe skills alone are not an opportunity. We give baking and business skills plus the opportunity to apply the skill as an entrepreneur. We want our training-capital-business-combination applied everywhere in the world where people need job opportunities.

What do we believe is an opportunity?

What do we believe is an opportunity? A skill does not create opportunity if you can’t apply it anywhere.

BISS wants to create opportunity. A skill is being given plus the opportunity to apply the skill. If we teach someone how to bake, the person needs to be offered a job in baking. Jobs in Uganda are not up for grabs. That’s why we want to create job creators, not job seekers. A skill with the opportunity to own a business. The capital, the business plan plus a powerful network that support each other because they’re chasing the same dream. Participants that are not (yet) ready to start their own business, will be connected to BISS bakeries where they can be employed. After a period of learning, they can then qualify to own their own BISS Bakery.

HISTORY

The idea behind BISS Bakeries was initially created in 2007, when Renee Pater(founder) did her thesis and thought of how jobs in baking could be created through a system of bakery training in combination with a micro-credit. Through collaboration with a partnering NGO, a number of women was trained and given start-up-kits to start work, until the partnering organization could not continue with the program.

The implementation of the program came to a standstill. Renee Pater decided to form a board of volunteers in the Netherlands, to get the ideas implemented. From June 2014, a Project Manager was appointed for the implementation (Lukas den Admirant), under supervision of Teun Winkel (retired professional). The two worked together for 8 years, until Teun Winkel also retired from his amazing voluntary work for BISS Bakeries. Since 2014, BISS Bakeries has been located at Katalemwa Cheshire Home(KCH), rehabilitation center for children with disabilities. KCH has been one of the partners connecting BISS to the parents of children with disabilities, to be helped via the BISS program.

BISS: Bake it Smart & Simple. In a Simple and Smart way, we train how to run a business in baking without electricity and running water. Simple in equipment, Smart in cost calculation and production. The independency of electricity and tap water makes BISS Bakeries suitable anywhere in Uganda, where there is a potential concentration of costumers.

BISS Bakeries Uganda is a fully registered and certified NGO in Uganda. To effectively implements its mission, the program runs through four – core activities:

  1. A selection process for new beneficiaries
  2. Training of new beneficiaries
  3. Supply of equipment and ingredients to the beneficiaries
  4. Hands-on help in starting and running the business

By the end of the process, a person finds him or herself with a self-reliant small-scale bakery business.
