BISS Briquettes Program

Green energy for bakeries and communities

Firewood and charcoal are large contributors to deforestation. In a country with a fast-growing population and little availability of green alternatives, this program became extremely relevant.

In 2021, BISS built a briquette production location in Tororo. The set up is similar of that of our bakeries: no use of heavy machineries, Smart & Simple. Through a donation of Bakkerij Wiltink, we bought the equipment and trained a number of youths from Tororo to make briquettes.

Currently, the production place is run by Martha, a young woman from Tororo. She runs the place with a couple of boys whom she literally got off the streets by giving them a job opportunity.
The production is done by a couple of manual machines. Currently we are looking for a new fund to upscale the production because of the increased demand. Charcoal and firewood keep increasing in prices, creating more market for the briquettes who are currently a cheaper cooking solution for households. Also, the BISS Bakeries learn in the training how to use briquettes, but the briquette location is sometimes far away from the bakery. A number of new production places would be ideal for further increasing of green impact.

  • Number of youths was trained in briquette making and the importance of the switch to green energy
  • Production location was put up with Tororo, currently employing 5 youths in producing and selling briquettes
  • A number of sales locations was put up around Tororo town, with branding of BISS Briquettes, Fuel for the Future.
  • Optimization of inputs used for briquette production in terms of usage of green waste and burning quality.
  • All BISS Bakeries participants are trained in using briquettes, creating awareness and opening up market in the working areas of BISS Bakeries.
  • Optimizing the BISS Briquette formula with additional production capacity
  • Replicating the formula in existing and new areas where BISS Bakeries are located to promote the use of green energy among all bakeries and their communities
  • Encouraging partnering organizations to include a briquette program in their activities and being the implementing partner where necessary.
